I have loved fashion since I was little. Playing dress up was always a favorite pastime - in fact, I STILL play dress up every now and again with the clothes in my closet. I have a massive collection of Lucky Magazines, Vogues, Elles, Glamours and Vanity Fairs that I can't bear to throw away. I am a What Not to Wear, Say Yes to the Dress, and Project Runway devotee. I even spent a fair bit of time working in retail as a personal shopper. I am known in my social circles as "The Girl with the Cute Shoes," "The Girl with the Great Clothes," and "The Girl with the Cool Glasses." Fashion and I go hand in hand.
I also have loved writing since I was little. I went to state for the Young Authors contest in 2nd and 4th grade and I won for my school in 3rd and 5th. I have been dabbling with novel writing since middle school (dabbling |
more seriously since high school) and have taken a stab at play and short-film writing on more than one occasion. To no one's surprise, I took this and decided to study journalism and English in college.
Over time, I developed a love of video making. I got into the YouTube world in 2008 and finally became a content creator in 2010. Since then I have subscribed to nearly 200 other channels and have developed four channels of my own. The craft of video making and editing has been a great outlet for my creativity, and I enjoy making new things and meeting new people through a common medium.
I was looking for a way to merge these three loves, and it wasn't until a visit in 2012 with a friend and mentor, Carrie Swearingen, that a solution emerged. Carrie lived in Evanston, a suburb of Chicago, where the writing community is thick and fierce. She asked me if there were any local fashion magazines or newspapers with fashion features that I could write for.
If I lived in Evanston? If I lived in Chicago? No problem. I would have answered with a resounding "Yes." I live in Sycamore, Illinois. Our population is 17,600 people. We have 1 middle school and 1 high school. We are completely surrounded by corn and soybean fields. Every year we have a festival devoted to pumpkins. So when Carrie asked me if we had a local fashion magazine, well. I pretty much laughed in her face.
But Carrie being Carrie, she instantly responded by suggesting that I start one. This wasn't a thought that had EVER crossed my mind before, but it made perfect sense. We started bouncing ideas back and forth on what it could be - I could get the community involved and host fashion events, I could feature local fashion shops, I could share tips and tricks on being fashion conscious in a small town, I could write articles on trends, I could, I could, I could.
So I'm going to DO. Hence this website, Cornfield Couture.
I've learned that in a small town, it's easy to throw fashion and style by the wayside. We aren't in New York, so we don't think we should care. But I care, and I personally have found that caring has it's benefits - looking and feeling your best is important no matter where you live, and fashion can be found in the fields, too!
I hope to be able to use my love of fashion, writing, and video to it's full potential here, and I hope you'll join me on this endeavor.
Come out to the corn! I think you'll like what it has to offer.
