Amy Adams
This is a look that I'm used to seeing on Reese Witherspoon, but I'm loving it on Amy Adams, too!  The sleek column dress with stick-straight hair is flawless, and she looks amazing.  I seriously can't wait to see her Oscars look - she hasn't missed yet this season!
Edith Bowman
I want this dress in my wardrobe right.  Now.  Yeah, it's a tad ill-fitting in the bodice, but the color is glorious on Edith's skin, she accessorized perfectly, her hair was mussy enough to contrast the lace, and it was a unique, stand-out piece.

Plus it has pockets.  You can't beat a dress with pockets.
Reese Witherspoon
I said it once, and I'll say it again - THIS is the Reese I like to see on the carpet.  Simple, sleek, modern.  Beachy waves in the hair.  Flawless.

She should also only wear purple from now until forever.  It's her color, for sure.  (remember the Oscars in 2007?  Eggplant works for her.)

PLUS can we talk about how slamming her body is in this dress?  Ridiculous.
Julie Walters
THIS is how you dress your age.  Her look is sparkley without being overdone, age appropriate without being matronly.

I'll admit, I might be a bit biased because she's Molly Weasley.  Still, I hope when I'm 64 I'll look this good.
Rosamund Pike
This woman in black, I tell you.  I've been loving her looks this season, and this was no exception.  The neckline was perfect for her, and the overall cut made her look like a tall glass of water.

Best Couples

Eddie Redmayne and
Hannah Bagshawe

Both of these looks could have gone horribly wrong, but together they managed to work.

A blue velvet suit is extremely risky, and a high-collared metallic lace dress is usually a red carpet miss.  However, the sheen of the blue velvet and the blue-slate gown compliment each other perfectly.

They look like opulent, red carpet royalty.
Edward Norton and Shauna Robertson
I've discussed before how hard it is to pull off a tea-length dress, but Shawna did so flawlessly.  The pale blue-and-gold color was perfect for Shawna's skin tone, and the silhouette looked amazing on her figure.  I'm a stickler for styling, and her earrings, ring, shoes, and hair all worked together harmoniously.

Edward did us all a favor and kept it simple and classic as our Good Lord intended.
Lea Seydoux and Monica Bellucci
These Spectre actresses really pulled out all the stops for the BAFTAs this year.

Lea's yellow gown was a fashion moment reminiscent of Michelle Williams' 2006 saffron Vera Wang Oscars look.  I want this gown in my wardrobe.  I would wear it every day of my life and prance through a field of marigolds and daffodils.

And Monica's gown was just as lovely in a dark, tall, goddess sort of way.  Usually a bell sleeve and a dropped flare would be a serious faux pas, but because her gown was tailored flawlessly, the result was amazing.  I want Angelina Jolie to wear this look ASAP.

Bravo, Ladies!!
Benedict Cumberbatch and
Sophie Hunter

Sophie Hunter has rocked her pregnancy all award season long, and this look was no exception.  She and Benedict both look best in basic black.
Keira Knightly and James Righton
I'm thrilled that Keira has continued to redeem herself after her fashion disaster at the Globes.  This look was so "English Tea with the Queen,"  and it was a perfect ensemble for the BAFTAs.

Keira and James should totally stick with black and white - it works for them!

David Beckham
I have hereby decided that David Beckham should make an appearance at every award show from now until forever, dressed just like this.

Yup.  That is all.
Douglas Booth
If you're going to do a colored jacket, this is how you do it.  Make it a solid, not obnoxious color with a single button, and everything else should be classic and tailored.  Well.  Done.
Tom Hiddleston
I don't think I realized how tall Tom was until he showed up in this look.  The skinny, tailored pant did wonders.
Michael Keaton
I've spoken before about how difficult a double-breasted suit can be to pull off, especially if you aren't really thin.  Michael's slightly two-tone look managed to work wonders.  I really hope he shows up in a similar look to the Oscars!!

Worst Dressed

Felicity Jones
This was an extremely disappointing look for Felicity, especially given how great she looked at the SAG awards.  I can see how this gown might have looked good on the runway, and the idea was a decent one, but the fit was just wrong.

It was rumpled at the bust, too long by her feet, and the flowers started too low on her hips.  If the waistline had been moved up to her natural waist, the whole look might have been better.

Plus...taffeta?  Taffeta rarely works on anyone.
Hayley Atwell
Okay.  I hate saying anything bad about anything related to Hayley Atwell.  She plays Agent Carter.  She's my feminist hero.  I adore everything about her.  BUT.

This is just not a good look.  The dress kind of made a 40s reference, but it wasn't quite 40s enough, and the asymmetry on the dress and the wavy seam in the front was just weird and unflattering.  What's worse is that the styling is all wrong.  You can't do a 40s referential dress    with an 80s stripper shoe!!

And maybe I'm just used to her Peggy Carter "sweet dreams" red lip, but her makeup made her look washed out and older than she is.  Disappointing for such a beautiful woman.
Julianne Moore
I have no idea what Julianne was thinking.  This might have been an okay look in 1996, but it's not remotely okay now.  The sleeves.  The CHOKER.  Ugh.

At least if you're going to do this, put your hair up and get it out of the way of the gown.  It's just too much red for this red-head.
Hofit Golan
I don't think there's a lot to say about this.

Just because you ARE a star doesn't mean you have to WEAR one.

Best in Black

Meghan Trainor - Galia Lahav
Meghan Trainor proved that just because you're at the Grammys doesn't mean you have to dress weird.  I mean, she looked all-out GALMOUROUS.

She still showed a little flair with the short underskirt, but the lace overlay, the sexy waves in the hair, and the classic makeup puts her at the fashion level of Academy Award winning starlets.

I'm definitely all about that bass.  Bout that bass.  No treble.

Maybe a little treble, because this was a HIGH NOTE of the Grammys red carpet.

#musicjokes
Miley Cyrus - Alexandre Vauthier
I am never one to give Miley credit for anything, but I have to admit, she looks pretty great.

This is a sexy dress for sure, but the cutouts are in just the right places so as not to become sleazy.  The v-neck is low, but because she's small chested she can pull that off.

Her hair, makeup, and jewelry is perfectly simple, and FOR ONCE she kept it really classy.
Beyonce - Proenza Schouler
I'm pretty sure that Queen B just wakes up like this.

I mean, she just KNOWS how to dress.  She knows how to stand.  She knows how to live and breathe and sing and dance and seriously why is she blessed with all of the things.

Many said she has looked better in the past, and I'm inclined to agree, but that doesn't mean she doesn't still look completely fabulous here.
Gwen Stefani - Atelier Versace
The Grammys is one of the few places where a jumpsuit is appropriate, and Gwen Stefani did it the jumpsuit RIGHT.

The wavy bodice fits like a glove, and the slightly pleated pants are remarkably flattering.  Her styling was wonderful, and she looked better than I've seen her look on the carpet in a long time.

A+!
Jessie J - Ralph and Russo
I couldn't get over how good Jessie J looked in this gown.  Like Meghan Trainor's, it was black, sheer, and fabulous.  I'm pretty obsessed with her hair (HOW DID THEY GET IT TO BE SO STRAIGHT???) and her makeup was wickedly dark and beautiful.

She could totally play Queen of the Night in Mozart's Magic Flute dressed in this and I'd be all about it.

Best "Ice Princesses"

Jennifer Hudson - Tom Ford
This is definitely one of my favorite looks on Jennifer Hudson.  As much as the Grammys are known for wild, outrageous outfits, Jennifer kept it extraordinarily simple, and the results were fantastic.

I am CRAZY about her necklace (and my jeweler mother loved it too) and I'm so, so in love with the purple lip.

She's proved that she's confident enough in herself to not have to show up in a crazy dress to get attention.
Katy Perry - Zuhair Murad
At first I thought this was Kelly Osbourne, and while I would have liked this look on either of them, when I found out it was Katy, I was thrilled.  She has emerged from her Super Bowl horror show like a queen, and THIS is how you make a comeback.

I loved the purple wig, the sheer fringe dress was flawless, and her overall styling has never been better.
Lady Gaga - Brandon Maxwell
If this dress were worn by any other person at any other event, it would have landed on my "worst" list.  But on Gaga?  This is as toned-down as she's looked in some time, and I think it's all thanks to Mr. Tony Bennett.  He's toned her down and classed her up, and the results are amazing.

A major congratulations is due to Gaga and Bennett on their Grammy win!!  I'm so proud of the work they've accomplished together.
Taylor Swift - Elie Saab
The only thing that Taylor could have done better is to wear pink earrings to tie in her shoes.  I'm willing to overlook that detail because she, as always, looks fantastic.

The color of this dress is fantastic on her, and her styling is perfection.  I love her to death and she just never misses.

Best Groupings

Picture
Picture
Haim - Chloe and Stella McCartney
I feel like this is one of those fashion moments that will go down as one of Haim's best looks now and forever.  It's their first Grammy appearance, and this was a perfect way to make a debut.

Classic with a twist, 90s grunge with 20th century modernity.  I'm in love.

Haim is everything.  Everything is Haim.
Sia and Maddie Ziegler
This is one of those looks that most people will think is too weird and gimmicky, but it's Sia.  She's kind of weird and gimmicky.  Fortunately, her music is not, so I'm cool with it.

I appreciate Sia's performance anonymity and her way of making her performers "her" through the blonde wig.  I think the old fashioned menswear looks were great for the both of them, and they stayed true to their aesthetic.

Worst Dressed

Madonna - Givenchy
A lot of people have said that dissing this outfit is "ageist" and that no one would be badmouthing it if Madonna was 20.  I wholeheartedly disagree.  This straight up wouldn't work on anyone.

I would halfway understand this if it were a performance/stage look (and later on in the night, Madonna did carry over the matador theme into her stage outfit) but as a red carpet look?  It simply doesn't make sense.

It also doesn't make sense that Givenchy created this.  I had so much respect for Givenchy before now and my brain is at war with itself.
Rihanna - Giambattista Valli
If this dress had half the fabric...

If this dress had been a different color...

If this dress had been worn to an event celebrating couture (i.e. the Met Gala.) ...

WE WOULD HAVE FELT DIFFERENTLY.

As is, it looks like a Barbie cake topper, and Rihanna is to pretty to do that to herself.
Joy Villa
All I see when I look at this dress is those 6-pack holders that ocean fish get caught in that causes them to get strangled and die.

I kinda hope that whoever created this dress was met with that fate.

Not really, but kinda really.
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian
Kim's Jean Paul Gaultier dress looked amazing on the runway.  You know why?  Because it fit the model.  On Kim?  The shoulders don't fit, the sleeves are too long, and it's simply too big for her.

Here's what I think: this is secretly Kim's normal, average bathrobe.  Because she's so rich and so self-indulgent, I can just picture her getting out of the shower and putting this on as freaking loungewear around the house.  Am I wrong?  No?  Didn't think so.

And Kanye?  Who told you that Robin Hood boots worked with a velvet suit?  Because it DON'T.

Julianna Margulies - Giambattista Valli
Photographs just don't do this dress justice.  I thought Julianna looked great at the Globes, but this look just stepped it up a notch.

The color is BRILLIANT on her skin, and she was styled to perfection; only with a simple, clean cut dress could you pull off a loose-swept ponytail, and she didn't overdo it with jewelry.

Adore.
Lupita Nyong'o - Elie Saab
This was a love-it-or-hate-it look, but in my book Lupita knocked it out of the park yet again.

ONLY Lupita could carry a low cut SLEEVED dress in a watercolor print overlayed with a stripe.  Her hair and makeup was flawless.  SHE is flawless, really.  If I didn't love her I'd hate her.
Julianne Moore - Givinchy Couture
Green is an absolute no-go on the red carpet, on magazine covers, and basically anywhere in the fashion industry.  How then, did Julianne Moore manage to make this VERY green dress work??  Several ways:

1. It's EMERALD green, and a gorgeous shade of emerald.  Not pool table green, not olive green, not sage, not mint.  Emerald.  It's the perfect choice of green for her skin tone and hair color.

2. The tank straps and the graduated beading on the dress made it work in terms of styling.  It was reflective of 20s flappers without being a costume, and it was clearly a dress unique to her.

3.  The beachy waves in her hair toned down the formality of the dress and somehow just WORKED, and she paired the green dress with PURPLE earrings.  Brilliance.
Emmy Rossum - Armani Prive
THIS IS HOW A STAR SHOULD DRESS.

Really.  This will go down as one of my favorite red carpet moments of all time.

The dress is flawless.  Her hair is flawless.  Her jewelry is flawless.

Ugh.

Love.
Felicity Jones - Balenciaga
Everyone has been talking about how Felicity Jones is the "it-girl" to watch in terms of fashion moments this year, and I really haven't seen it until now.

This was Felicity's "Jackie Kennedy" moment.  The soft pink looked amazing on her skin and with her dark hair, and she didn't overdo it with the jewelry, which a lot of celebrities have the tendency to do when they wear a simple, clean-lined dress.

Also, this dress was TAILORED to PERFECTION, which is so so so important with a simple dress.  I've decided that Felicity and Balenciaga should work together forever.
Best in Black and White
Emma Stone - Dior Couture
HOW IS EMMA STONE ABLE TO PULL OFF THE MENSWEAR STYLE TWICE IN A ROW?!?!

I definitely didn't like this when I first saw it on the carpet.  Then she swished that skirt and posed.

Sold.

But seriously, I don't get how she's able to pull this off.  Nobody can pull a look like this off.

I wonder what she's going to wear to the Oscars?  Menswear at the Oscars might not go over well with me...only time will tell.
Reese Witherspoon - Armani
This is the Reese Witherspoon I like to see on the carpet.

Clean, structured fabric, solid color, hair swept back, natural makeup, classic jewels.  If she sticks to this, she can't miss!

And going back to what I said about Felicity Jones' look about tailoring; this dress is tailored within an inch of Reese's life.  Whoever is responsible for such work deserves to get a SAG award for Best Tailoring.
Rosamund Pike - Dior Haute Couture
Okay, yes, this look might have been better served on a woman who is actually pregnant instead of a woman who has already had her baby.

BUT.  The dress itself is divine.  Really fashion forward, styled gloriously, and Rosamund wears it SO well.

Also...

THIS IS HOW YOU STAND IN A SHORT DRESS.
Maggie Gyllenhaal - Thakoon
Maggie followed a great rule of fashion: Pick ONE thing to show off.

Keeping everything covered except the cleavage was a genius choice for Maggie.  With her short hair, she is able to show a lot of neck (always a good thing.)  She drew the attention to her neck with her larger earrings, and the placement of the skin she showed put all the focus on all the right places.

Also, I love a girl who can show this much cleavage without looking remotely sleazy.  Magic.

Best Couples
Picture

Picture
Keira Knightly and James Righton
LITERALLY PRAISE THE LORD that Keira redeemed herself after her Golden Globe atrocity of a dress.

THIS is how a woman who is pregnant should dress on the red carpet.  Lace can look really old fashioned, but the shock of purple keeps it modern, and she added edge with the ear cuff.  I'm so obsessed with ear cuffs.  I'm so obsessed with this dress.

I mean really, it's perfect for her.  She's small busted, and the top is cut perfectly for that.  She's pregnant, and the midsection was cut perfectly for that.  I can't deal.

In addition, I actually haven't ever seen Keira and her husband together since the photos of her wedding were released, so it was so nice to see them on the red carpet looking so happy and relaxed!  They really suit each other.  Love it all.
Sophia Vergara and Joe Maneniello
This newly engaged couple could not have looked any better.

It was so refreshing to see Sophia in a dress that WASN'T a mermaid shape, and she proved that she could still look sexy without showing off every last curve.  Her best accessory was, of course, her engagement ring, and her man looked totally dashing by her side.
Tatiana Maslaney and Tom Cullen
I have a major thing for black and white dresses, and this  dress was no exception.  Tatiana's striped gown didn't photograph incredibly well, but I was crazy about it.  The Old Hollywood cut with the new, modern pattern was a perfect mix for the SAGs.

Tom's look was intensely classy, too.  Normally I love a classic look, but somehow the dark double-breasted suit with no tie looks fashion forward and chic.
Best TV Show Host / Best Man
Maria Menounos - Ramona Kaveza
Brocade is INSANELY hard to wear, but Maria pulled it off beautifully.  The cut is simple, her hair is simple, she kept the jewelry simple.  Totally timeless.

As a TV host, it's always important to not overshadow the stars you're interviewing, and Maria was able to stand out without upstaging anyone.
Eddie Redmayne - Prada
Eddie is a slight man, and only a thin guy can do a double breasted suit with a slim, tailored pant.  So.  Fine.

He also knows how to stand on the red carpet.  Good work, Ed.  Good work.

Laverne Cox - Johanna Johnson
I think a lot of people didn't feature this on their worst dressed lists because they didn't want to say anything bad about Laverne Cox, which I completely understand.  I don't want to say anything bad about her either.  I love her and I think she's amazing.  This was just not a good look.

I have no idea what's going on with her hair, to start.  A busy, shiny dress like this requires an up-do of some sort, and the weird ridged pouf on the top wasn't quite cutting it.

The dress itself isn't a total train wreck.  Johanna Johnson is a wonderful designer, but her signature style features light silk fabric, which is extremely difficult to wear.  Laverne simply doesn't have the body type for it.
Lorelai Linklater
What even is this.

Who even thought this was a remotely good idea.

That's all.
Taryn Manning - Elisabetta Franchi
This is one of the few dresses that actually looks better in photos than it did in person.  Unfortunately, that's not saying very much.

The color is horrifying both as a red carpet color in general and with Taryn's skin tone.  The fit of it was weird and wonky, especially in the chest (and the fact that she wasn't wearing a bra didn't help.)  The cut was completely matronly and unflattering for someone on such a hip, trendy show.

In addition, the styling could not have been any worse.  Taryn's hair pulled all the way back made her look old, and the super dark eyeshadow with super pale lips on her light skin made her look like a corpse.

A total train wreck, I'm sorry to say.
Jennifer Aniston - Vintage Galiano
Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez should form a club.  We'll call it the "I'm Trying Way Too Hard Not to Age Club."

I get that this is a vintage Galiano and this was the dress that put Galiano on the map and it's full of history and yada yada.

But seriously.  You're 45, Jen.  We know your boobs look great and you have good hair.  We don't need the reminder every.  Single.  Award show.  Have a little class and age with grace.
Uzo Aduba - Angel Sanchez
Uzo is a beautiful woman inside and out, and the color of this dress is gorgeous on her skin tone...but that's really the only nice thing I have to say about it.

I know of Angel Sanchez' work, and based on that I have no idea where this atrocity came from.  Whoever decided to layer strips of kitchen sponges and make it into a dress should be banned from fashion.
